With six million copies sold worldwide, it is the second-bestselling Genesis game behind the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic 2 broke video game sales records and became the fastest-selling game at the time, grossing over $450 million. Critics considered Sonic 2 an improvement over the first game and praised the visuals, level design, gameplay, and music, though the low difficulty level and similarities to its predecessor were criticized. It was released in November 1992 to acclaim and received numerous year-end accolades, including two Golden Joystick Awards. Sonic 2 was widely anticipated, and Sega backed it with an aggressive $10 million marketing campaign. As with the first game, Masato Nakamura, a member of the J-pop band Dreams Come True, composed the soundtrack. The development suffered setbacks, including cultural differences between the Japanese and American staff, and numerous levels were cut due to time constraints and quality concerns. Sonic 2 was intended to be faster and more ambitious than the first game. Members of the original development team-including programmer Yuji Naka and designer Hirokazu Yasuhara-moved from Japan to California to join the project. Sonic 2 introduces Sonic's sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower and features faster gameplay, larger levels, a multiplayer mode, and special stages featuring pre-rendered 3D graphics.Īfter Sonic the Hedgehog greatly increased the popularity of the Genesis in North America, Sega directed STI founder Mark Cerny to start Sonic 2 in November 1991. Like the first Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), players traverse side-scrolling levels at high speeds while collecting rings, defeating enemies, and fighting bosses. ![]() Players control Sonic as he attempts to stop Doctor Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds to power his space station. The mobile version (iOS/Android) contains ten new levels in a new environment called Hidden Palace Zone, a boss attack mode, upgraded graphics, faster frame rate, a re-mastered soundtrack, and Knuckles as a third playable character.Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a 1992 platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute (STI) for the Sega Genesis. This mode is a horizontally split-screen race through levels based on three of the zones in the single player game. The game also features a 2-player versus mode. This is useful when stuck near steep slopes or other areas where you need some momentum. Sonic (and Tails) can now also get speed from a standing start by holding down and repeatedly pressing the jump button for a "spin dash". ![]() Tails has infinite lives and the camera remains focused on Sonic, meaning that Tails will not hinder play. New to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the ability to play the game co-op with a friend - at any time, a player can plug in a second controller and take over the AI controlled Tails. Complete all the checkpoints and you'll earn one of the seven Chaos Emeralds. In this stage, you must gather a set amount of rings in a halfpipe-like stage before you reach a checkpoint. If the player reaches a continue point lamppost with 50 or more rings, they'll be able to access the Special Stage. If he is hit again when he has no rings, he'll lose a life. However, the rings also act as protection if Sonic is hurt when he is carrying rings, they scatter everywhere and he is briefly invincible. As with most platformers, when the player collects 100 rings, they earn an extra life. Sonic and Tails can collect rings which are scattered throughout all of the levels. Only Sonic the Hedgehog, and his new tagalong partner, Miles 'Tails' Prower, can stop Robotnik and his army of Badniks from taking over the world. This way they can build his powerful weapon, the Death Egg. In order to do that, he imprisons and transforms all animals into robots called "Badniks". There are two Acts in nearly all of the 10 Zones, and at the end of each Zone's last Act is a machine that Robotnik controls, which you must defeat to progress. ![]() ![]() Like the original, players run through different worlds called "zones", which each have their own specific theme.
